What you desire

A life is either all spiritual or not spiritual at all.

No man can serve two masters.
Your life is shaped by the end you live for.
You are made in the image of what you desire.
- Thomas Merton

film still from The Wings of Desire.

Hi Kathleen. I haven't seen it in ages, and I'm well overdue for another dose.

I'm not sure how the image relates to the Merton quote but I just wanted to use it anyway.

I did a bit of research on the statue that the angels roost on.

It's a 19th century monument to Prussian victories.

There's something quite ironic and moving about a golden victory statue looking down on a city that was utterly devastated by war and then split in half between two superpowers.

After WW2, the French wanted it demolished, fearing it might inspire German militarism. But I think it was the right decision to leave it standing, as an ironic reminder of what militarism leads to.
